A good teacher can change the way you see yourself

Today’s guest is Luis, a teacher at the In Down-Town language school. The interview will be conducted by our volunteer from Germany, Johann. Luis comes from Colombia, has been teaching English for seven years, and is currently learning one of the most challenging languages in Europe himself. He is a teacher who believes in humor, real communication, and the power of leading by example.

Johann: Hello. Our guest today is Louis. He teaches English at our language school In Down-Town. Hello, Luis.

Luis: Hello. How are you?

Johann: I’m good and you?

Luis: I’m doing fine.

Johann: Okay, perfect. Tell me first about yourself. Where are you from and how many years have you been working as a teacher?

Luis: Well, I am originally from Colombia and yeah, so I’m from there, but obviously I live in Estonia now and I’m a teacher.

I have been teaching English for seven years now.

Johann: Oh, that’s a lot.

Luis: Yeah, time flies.

Johann: Okay, and what prompted you to choose the teaching profession?

Luis: Well, that’s an interesting question. You know, I am a teacher because of a good teacher I had. So there’s a story about it, but I’ll make it short. So when I was in high school and then I had this, you know, usually we have good teachers, but I had this great teacher! I was lost. I didn’t know what to do with my life. I didn’t know what to study after high school, but I had this amazing English teacher. She was so good. She was so funny and a great person. And she somehow showed me that I was good at languages, something that I didn’t know. So I kind of, it just kind of fell into place. I said, I want to be a teacher. I would like to be like her. She somehow changed my perception about what I was good at. So I became a teacher because I saw a good role model in somebody. And I was like, I want to be like her. Why not?

Johann: Okay, very interesting. And what do you think is the most difficult thing about being a foreign language teacher?

Luis: Well, to my opinion, it’s not really like, there are just small things that make your job difficult sometimes. Like when students are very demotivated, for example. I would say that’s like something that makes my life as a teacher difficult. If students are demotivated, they just don’t want to study, I would say. But it is overall not a big problem. And since I like teaching so much, I really don’t have a lot of complains about it. And I really enjoy it.

Johann: And what languages do you speak? Or are you currently learning any languages?

Luis: I speak English and Spanish. And I am currently learning Estonian. Which, you know, it is known for being one of the most difficult languages in Europe. So it’s not an easy task.

Johann: What is the most common problem students face when learning a language?

Luis: Okay, there are so many things you could say. But I would say it is very difficult when you feel overwhelmed by the process of it. Learning a language requires a lot of time, effort, and discipline. And sometimes you’re just putting everything. Like you’re trying your best, but then you feel like it’s not good enough. And there are so many things you want to express, but you feel like you can’t. But it’s what I think is very hard. When you are learning, but you feel frustrated within the process. Because you think it is so hard and you don’t think you’re good enough. So I also feel like language learning, it is hard in the sense that sometimes you feel like you know a lot and you feel confident. And that can change within a second. And then you feel like you don’t know anything. So I think that’s very hard. It’s very frustrating. And as a language teacher, I can see that in my students a lot. And I experienced that as an Estonian language learner myself.

Johann: Okay, and what methods do you use to motivate your students? For example, things like games, projects, technology?

Luis: Well, games are classic. I try to do that a lot. And technology is always good. There are good classic things you can do, such as a simple cat. That’s something my students love. So that’s something that I like. But I would say my biggest strategy is making the lesson fun. Like bringing a good sense of humour into the classroom. So that the students can feel relaxed, that they can joke about things. And I can also joke about things. And they’re not afraid to be themselves as just people, you know. So when your lessons are fun, you just make jokes. They make jokes with boundaries, of course. Because you cannot disrespect your teacher and the other way around. So I think that that makes my lessons really good, or at least good enough.

Johann: Very good.And many courses and schools alongside in class lessons offer online language learning. In your opinion, which format of instruction is better and why?

Luis: Well, I strongly believe that there is no better or worse. It all depends on you as a learner. How do you function better? Do you function and learn better when you are surrounded by people in person? That you can just talk to people on the spot. And you can just learn better. Because that’s just the way it works for you. Then it’s amazing. If you learn online. Because you just learn. It’s so much easier for you to be on your couch while you’re taking your lesson. Sipping coffee and just listening to the teacher and everybody else. And if it works for you, then it’s okay. Both are fine. Both are effective. It depends on you, what you prefer and what you feel comfortable with. I would definitely just add that if it is easier to get distracted at home as a learner. You can just get distracted easily. But when you are in a lesson with a teacher, you feel like you have to be more present, paying attention to everything that’s going on. Otherwise, you’re just gonna be pushed to be more present in an in-person lesson, so to speak.

Johann: In today’s world, students have quickly become used to fast translation and text generation via AI. And it has become harder for teachers to teach them independent language thinking.Do you face this problem in your lessons? And how do you deal with it?

Luis: Of course I do, it is very common. If they could, they would translate everything super quickly using ChatGPT on their phones or Google Translate. That’s why I take their phones away at the beginning of the lesson.

Johann: So very simple.

Luis: It is something very simple and it works. So basically, but they can still use it as long as: first, they ask their classmates what they want to translate. If nobody knows from their classmates, then it’s me. And if I still don’t get it and I don’t know, then they can translate with their phones. And believe me, only one out of 100 times they actually get to use their phones. Usually their classmates know. And of course, I already know.

Johann: So what activities allow you to truly take a break from work and recharge your batteries in your free time?

Luis: Travelling. Travelling makes me very happy. I feel that when I travel somewhere else, I disconnect. I’m not thinking about work. I’m not thinking about my students or anything. So I leave everything behind. When I come back, I pick up on everything and I can start fresh, so to speak. So travelling, that’s my biggest passion, I would say. If I cannot, maybe just hanging out with my friends, going to a cafe, reading a book. Simple activities. They really make me forget about everything, I try to leave work at work. So I try not to mix my personal life with work. They are two different things and they should always be separated.

Йоханн: Здравствуйте и добро пожаловать на наш очередной подкаст с интервью из школы In Down-Town. Сегодня у нас в гостях Луис — преподаватель английского языка в нашей школе. Здравствуйте, Луис!

Луис: Здравствуйте! Как у вас дела?

Йоханн: У меня всё хорошо, а у вас?

Луис: Тоже всё отлично.

Йоханн: Прекрасно. Расскажите немного о себе: откуда вы и сколько лет работаете преподавателем?

Луис: Я родом из Колумбии, но сейчас живу в Эстонии и работаю преподавателем. Английский язык я преподаю уже семь лет.

Йоханн: Ого, это немало.

Луис: Да, время летит незаметно.

Йоханн: Почему вы выбрали профессию преподавателя?

Луис: Это интересная история. Я стал учителем благодаря одному человеку — моему школьному преподавателю. Постараюсь рассказать кратко. В старших классах я не понимал, чем хочу заниматься в жизни. Но у меня была потрясающая учительница английского — очень харизматичная, с отличным чувством юмора и невероятно вдохновляющая. Она помогла мне увидеть, что у меня есть способности к языкам — сам я этого раньше не осознавал. И всё как будто сложилось само собой: я понял, что хочу стать таким же учителем, как она. Она изменила моё представление о себе.

Йоханн: Очень интересно. А что, по вашему мнению, самое сложное в работе преподавателя иностранного языка?

Луис: В целом это не какие-то глобальные проблемы, а скорее мелкие вещи. Например, когда студенты теряют мотивацию. Это, пожалуй, самое сложное — когда ученики просто не хотят учиться. Но в общем я очень люблю свою работу, поэтому не могу сказать, что у меня есть серьёзные претензии. Я действительно получаю удовольствие от преподавания.

Йоханн: На каких языках вы говорите? Изучаете ли сейчас какие-то новые?

Луис: Я говорю на английском и испанском. Сейчас изучаю эстонский — а он, как известно, считается одним из самых сложных языков в Европе. Это непросто.

Йоханн: С какой проблемой чаще всего сталкиваются ученики при изучении языка?

Луис: Таких проблем много, но одна из главных — это чувство перегруженности. Изучение языка требует времени, усилий и дисциплины. Иногда ты стараешься изо всех сил, но тебе кажется, что этого недостаточно. Хочется многое сказать, но не получается. Это вызывает сильное разочарование. Кроме того, уверенность может меняться очень быстро: сегодня тебе кажется, что ты всё понимаешь, а завтра — что не знаешь ничего. Это тяжело. Я часто вижу это у своих учеников и сам испытываю то же самое, изучая эстонский.

Йоханн: Какие методы вы используете, чтобы мотивировать студентов? Игры, проекты, технологии?

Луис: Игры — это классика, я часто их использую. Технологии тоже помогают. Есть и простые проверенные вещи — например, викторины или карточки, которые очень нравятся ученикам.
Но, пожалуй, мой главный подход — сделать урок интересным. Я стараюсь привнести в занятия юмор, чтобы студенты чувствовали себя расслабленно, могли шутить и не боялись быть собой. Конечно, в рамках уважения. Но когда урок проходит в лёгкой атмосфере, это делает обучение гораздо эффективнее.

Йоханн: Сегодня многие школы предлагают онлайн-обучение. Какой формат, по вашему мнению, лучше?

Луис: Я не считаю, что есть «лучший» формат. Всё зависит от ученика. Кому-то важно живое общение, возможность сразу говорить и взаимодействовать — тогда лучше офлайн.
А кому-то комфортнее учиться дома, в спокойной обстановке — тогда онлайн идеально подходит.
Оба формата эффективны. Единственное — дома легче отвлекаться. В классе ты чаще остаёшься вовлечённым, потому что находишься в учебной среде.

Йоханн: Сейчас студенты активно используют переводчики и AI. Стало сложнее развивать самостоятельное мышление. Вы сталкиваетесь с этим?

Луис: Конечно, это очень распространённая ситуация. Если бы могли, ученики переводили бы всё сразу через ChatGPT или Google Translate. Поэтому я просто забираю у них телефоны в начале урока.

Йоханн: Просто и эффективно.

Луис: Да, и это работает. При этом у них есть правило: сначала спросить одноклассников, потом — меня. И только если никто не знает, можно воспользоваться телефоном. Честно говоря, в 99% случаев до телефонов дело не доходит — либо знают одноклассники, либо знаю я.

Йоханн: Как вы отдыхаете и восстанавливаетесь после работы?

Луис: Путешествия. Они делают меня по-настоящему счастливым. Когда я уезжаю, я полностью отключаюсь от работы. А если не получается путешествовать — просто встречаюсь с друзьями, иду в кафе, читаю книги. Простые вещи помогают переключиться. Я стараюсь не смешивать работу и личную жизнь — это должны быть разные сферы.
